GRANTS, BURSARIES AND SCHOLARSHIPS
Group Grants · Bursaries for Fine Arts Students from WSAC · CRD Arts Development Project Grants
Grants are given to Group Members to help fund their activities. To apply you must fill out the application of the BCAC (British Columbia Arts Council) as described below.
Bursaries are given to individual members based on need and application is made by letter as described below.
Scholarships are given to individuals based on merit.
Group Grants
- Group Grants from the West Shore Arts Council are available only to WSAC member groups in Colwood, Highlands, Langford, Metchosin or View Royal for their activities that require funding.
- Group Grants must be applied for by August 15th each year. The application should cover activities taking place from August 16 of that year until August 15 of the following year. Board decisions on grant applications received by August 15th will be made by April 1st of the following year.
The largest part of the funding for grants come from the British Columbia Arts Council (BCAC)and their application forms are often available to us shortly before their deadline. You can request an application form by e-mailing grants@westshorearts.org with the subject line: WSAC Grant Application Request giving your name, the name of your Group, your postal address and a telephone number at which we can contact you. You can also download the two-page British Columbia Arts Council Community Arts Council Arts Member Groups Assistance form from their site.
How to Apply
To apply, a WSAC Group must submit the following:
- A completed BCAC application form as noted above.
- A typed letter of application stating the specific intended use of the funding.
- Written, pictorial or recorded examples of the group’s endeavours in this field (eg. video, audio tape, photographs, photocopies).
- The Group’s official budget for the year indicating their financial status.
Conditions of a Grant
If you are awarded a WSAC grant you must fulfill the following conditions:
- You must use the award as requested in your application.
- As a condition of the subsidy, you must acknowledge the West Shore Arts Council and the British Columbia Arts Council in your activities, (including any website, video or other promotional material relating to the activities for which the Grant was used).

Bursaries for Fine Arts Students from WSAC
Part of our mandate is to encourage creative participation and excellence in the Arts. To that end, each year we accept applications from individual members to receive a bursary of up to $300.00 that will be used to further their education in their chosen field of artistic expression. The deadline for application is April 30th. No age restrictions apply.
Submission Criteria
In order to qualify for a Bursary you must meet the following criteria:
- Applicant must be an individual member of WSAC in good standing (paid up in the year they are applying).
- Applicant must have an address in Colwood, Highlands, Langford, Metchosin or View Royal as their primary residence.
Making Aplication
- Print out and complete in full the Individual Bursary Application Form, ensuring it is postmarked no later than April 30th and submit together with other supporting documentation.
- Provide a typed letter of application stating the specific intended use of the funding.
- Provide written, pictorial or recorded examples of your endeavors in your field of study (e.g., video, audio tape, photographs, photocopies). Include a self addressed stamped envelope if you wish us to return your portfolio. A reference from a teacher, guidance counselor or other professional in the field would also be valuable and could serve in the absence of other examples of work if necessary.
- Provide a brief explanation of the reason for requiring financial assistance.
Conditions of a Bursary
- As a condition of the subsidy, the recipient must acknowledge the West Shore Arts Council on all written materials (including any website, video or other promotional material) relating to the program or project.
- A recipient must use the award as requested in their letter of application. If he or she withdraws from or chooses not to attend the course of study, the bursary is to be returned in full to the WSAC.
- Past receipt of bursary support does not imply future awards.
- Applicants must provide proof of acceptance to the educational program for which they are applying for funding before a cheque will be issued.
- Final decisions on granting bursaries are at the discretion of the West Shore Arts Council Bursary Committee.

CRD Arts Development Project Grants
Capital Regional District
These grants provide support for
- arts organizations that work on a project-to-project basis;
- new and emerging arts organizations;
- arts organizations doing one-time programs or development projects.
Projects must be carried out in the CRD.
Deadlines
Project Grants deadlines are the second Friday of January and the first Friday of May at 4:30 p.m.
